Asif Ali Zardari: Pakistan's Political Patriarch

Image
Suffering from the lingering image of a money-laundering husband of a world-famous political icon, Benazir Bhutto, former president of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari is fast emerging as an intellectual patriarch of Pakistani politics. In a country where politicians are crude and petty, Zardari comes across as a statesman with a profound sense of reality mixed with intriguing idealism. For many Pakistanis, Zardari is still no more than a power-hungry widower of a murdered heroine. On a closer look, however, one finds that Zardari has been on the cutting edge of enlightenment in a conservative country sandwiched between militarism and Talibanization.   During his term in office as the President of Pakistan (2008-2013), and more importantly as the Co-Chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a party he inherited much like property from his in-laws, Zardari promoted women at key posts. He selected a woman as the Speaker of the National Assembly, making her the  first woman  in...

Bright Orange Jumpsuit -- An Emblem of Cruelty

Image
Bright Orange Jumpsuit -- An Emblem of Cruelty The Islamic State (ISIS) released a video showing the Jordanian pilot, Moaz al-Kasasbeh, dressed in an orange jumpsuit standing in a see-through cage. Later, the pilot was doused with petroleum and set on fire. The cruelty, surpassing all bounds of civilization, is nauseating. The ISIS has adopted the bright orange jumpsuit as the garment of revenge. The American and English journalists were dressed in orange jumpsuits before they were beheaded. Who has invented the bright orange jumpsuit? The world first saw the orange jumpsuits at Guantanamo prison. Helpless Muslim detainees dressed in orange jumpsuits were shown sitting in a holding area under the surveillance of US military police at Camp X-Ray at Naval Base Guantanamo Bay. The bright orange jumpsuit was also used when Muslim detainees were tortured in Iraq. The picture of a dog staring at the person wearing the orange jumpsuit was grotesque. It was a reminder that even...

Spreading Fear of Islam

Spreading-fear-of-Islam Press TV has interviewed Liaquat Ali Khan, author and Professor of Law at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, to discuss the ongoing hostilities against Muslims across the Western countries. The political commentator maintains that some Western media outlets such as the right-wing Fox News Channel have launched smear campaign of fueling Islamophobia and are spreading hatred against Muslims. He adds some Western groups are also exacerbating the situation by waging constant attacks on Islamic symbols, the Muslim holy book and the prophet. The analyst suggests that theses hostile moves must be countered by other news channels and alternative media.   JR/KA

Militarization of Pakistan Constitution

| Print |  E-mail Sunday, 11 January 2015 12:56 By  Liaquat Ali Khan  Share Link:                        Comments N ations do inane things under panic. Pakistan has chosen to amend its constitution to empower the armed forces to execute “religious terrorists” without due process and fundamental rights otherwise available under the criminal justice system in civilian courts. This extreme constitutional measure is taken in reaction to the December 16 attack on the Army Public School in Peshawar where more than  a hundred students were brutally massacred . Within hours of the school attack, the civilian government, on the urging of military officials, removed the ban on executions and  revived the death penalty  held in abeyance since 2008. Three days later, five persons involved in an assassination attempt in 2003 on General Pervez Musharraf were  executed ....

Creating Good News

Image
Creating Good News You have the power to create good news for yourself and for others. First, distinguish between giving good news and creating good news. In giving good news, you act as a messenger. In creating good news, you act as a creator. Acting as a messenger for giving good news is gratifying. But creating good news is exhilarating. You create good news for yourself and for others. It is much easier to create good news for others. Even though you can create good news for yourself, but allow others to create good news for you. If you are an employer, creating good news for employees is easy and good for the company. You create good news for an employee when you give her a raise, send her on a trip, move her into a nicer office, appreciate her work, or simply brighten her day with a sincere compliment. (No sexual harassment, please!). If you are a parent, creating good news for children is easy and good for the family. You create good news for a child when you buy...
